Doris H. Albee

December 1, 1927 — September 9, 2017

Doris H. Albee (nee Doris Bernice Haffeman), age 89, died peacefully on September 9, 2017, at Benedictine Manor in Wausau, Wisconsin, with her daughter by her side, under the compassionate care of Aspirus Hospice and Benedictine Manor staff.
Doris was born in Wausau, Wisconsin, on December 1, 1927 to the late Franklin and Elsie (Borchardt) Haffeman. She married Jay Birney Albee on August 2, 1947, in Oshkosh Wisconsin. He proceeded her in death on August 18, 1995. Doris remained in Oshkosh until June 2010 when she moved to Wausau to be closer to her daughter and family.
Doris attended Oshkosh Business College and worked as the office manager for the Mortell Dental Clinic in Oshkosh for twelve years until the adoption of her daughter in 1959. In 1977, she began working for the Oshkosh Red Cross and in 1983 she became the Executive Director until her retirement in 1993, continuing to do volunteer work on a local and state level for the Red Cross for many years following her retirement. She was honored with the American Red Cross Clara Barton Meritorious Volunteer Leadership Award and national Cynthia Wedel Award in recognition of her sustained superior and outstanding leadership to the Red Cross. Doris was also involved with selling Shaklee products and she was fondly referred to as the “vitamin lady” by her family; strongly advocating the benefits of the products she firmly believed in for her own health and well-being.
Doris lived her life with the purpose of serving God by helping others through her volunteer work and her professional and personal life. In addition to giving her time and compassion to others, she not only organized local blood drives but also donated countless pints of her own universal blood type on a regular basis. Throughout her years of living in Oshkosh, she was a long-time member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church—serving on several church committees and the Church Council. Doris was also a strong advocate of higher education and was an active member of the Oshkosh P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter CG.
Doris had a life full of wonderful friends and family and was always looking for opportunities to organize a family reunion to keep everyone in touch with each other. Hundreds of photos show evidence of many social gatherings, parties, bridge games with friends, and family get togethers throughout the years. She enjoyed traveling,
Doris is survived by her daughter, Jayne (Roger) Luce of Rothschild, WI; her grandsons, Patrick Luce, Paul Luce; her step-grandson, John Luce; her sister Lila Apell of Oshkosh, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Jay; brothers Norman and Franklin Haffeman; sisters Viola O’Neal and Francis Neitzke; step-grandson, Elliott Luce; sister-in-law, Lorraine Haffeman; brothers-in law, John O’Neal, Lawrence Neitzke and Don Apell; two nephews, John Neitzke and Gary Haffeman; and many dear friends.
She will be remembered for her incredibly positive attitude and her focus on counting her life’s many blessings--the most precious of which would be her 49 years of marriage to her husband, Jay; her daughter, Jayne; and the addition of her son-in-law and grandsons to her family. Her beautiful smile, style, grace and genuine compassion for others will be missed by all the lives she touched on earth, but has been joyfully welcomed in Heaven by her family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Friday, September 15, 2017 at the Konrad-Behlman Funeral Homes Westside. The Rev. Jan Veseth will officiate. Visitation will take place Thursday September 14, 2017 at 5-7PM and Friday from 9AM until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Oshkosh Red Cross, the P.E.O. Chapter CG-Oshkosh, or a local hospice organization of your choice.
