Chandler Allen La Berteaux

Chandler Allen La Berteaux, 87, born in Battle Creek, Michigan; March 9, 1920 to Roy and Beulah (Allen) La Berteaux passed away peacefully on Friday, October 12, 2007 at Mercy Medical center in Oshkosh.He attended the Chicago Art Institute in 1954 and worked as a commercial artist and photographer in Michigan and Florida for over 55 years. He owned his own advertising agency and photography studio for 35 of those years.Chan married Elaine Mildred Anderson in Battle Creek, Michigan on June 1, 1940. They made their home in several Western Michigan cities. In 1942 a son, Donald, was born; followed by a daughter, Valois, in 1949. Elaine preceded him in death on April 17, 2002.All of his life he was an artist working mainly in oil paints, pen & ink and acrylic paints. He took great pride in his portraits and landscapes.Other hobbies included reading about the Civil War, listening to music and watching the TV show M.A.S.H.Most of his adult life he was a member of the Lions Club and in later years joined the Masonic Temple. He also was involved in teaching art to the inmates of the Ionia Maximum Security Prison in Ionia, Michigan.Chan also was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Pompano Beach, Florida for over 25 years, retiring as Art Director for the Auxiliary.In 1994 he moved to Oshkosh after living in Florida for 28 years.Chan was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Earl and an infant sister, Valois.Survivors are: Donald (Barb) La Berteaux, Atlanta, GA; Valois (Jeff) Brothers, Oshkosh; six grandchildren, Allen La Berteaux, Erica McDougland, Karen Bridges, Mandy Caldwell, Autumn and Wyatt Brothers. There are also five great grandchildren with a sixth due in March of 2008.Chan has followed a family tradition by donating his body to a medical school. A memorial will be held at a later date for both Chandler and Elaine La Berteaux.Chandlers family extends its thanks to the wonderful staff at Arborview Manor in Oshkosh and the kind and caring staff at Parkview Health Center.
