Charles Nevitt

Charles Nevitt, 87, died at home on February 9, 2007. He was born January 17, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Jane Abbott Nevitt and George P. Nevitt. Chuck attended Todd School, Principia College and Oshkosh Teachers College, where he trained as a pilot by Steve Wittman. He joined the US Coast Guard in 1941, where he served on a weather observation/submarine patrol schooner during World War II. Chuck started his career with the former Nevitt Agency. He left insurance to manage the new Pioneer Marina, and then worked in various capacities at area boat marinas, conducted vessel surveys, and performed boat and yacht deliveries throughout U.S. until his retirement. Chuck was a six-time Commodore of the Oshkosh Yacht Club, overseeing ILYA regattas on many occasions during his tenure.An active sailor most of his life, he sailed Snipes, M-16s, E-boats, A-boats, several keel boats and his 53 ketch Stardust, which he sailed from Connecticut to her new home on Lake Winnebago. He also judged numerous sailing events throughout Wisconsin. Chuck was an avid ice boater, sailing A-boats, including Flying Dutchmen I and II and Witchcraft. He won the Northwest trophy, as well as the Stuart and Hearst cups. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, community theater, and sports cars. Chuck was active in the community and held past memberships in Rotary, Sports Car Club of America, Milwaukee Region (board member), American Legion, Elks Club, Oshkosh Community Players, US Power Squadron (officer), Oshkosh Yacht Club (life member), Oshkosh Ice Yacht Club, Fond du Lac Ice Yacht Club (life member), and Oshkosh Public Museum, among others. He also worked with the Chamber of Commerce on the Oshkosh Centennial, on the original Save the Grand Theater committee, and the Save the Fox Locks project. His first marriage, in 1946, to Kay Lyon, ended in divorce. He married Mary Ann Nitkowski on August 22, 1960. Chuck is survived by his wife and four daughters: Valerie Pfeiffer, her husband, John, and their children Charlie and Jane; Elizabeth Nevitt and her daughter Lydia Butts; Noelle Pelot, her husband, Alan, and their children Andrew and Ella; and Polly Hensen, her husband, Peter, and her son Mitchell White. He is also survived by two sons from his first marriage, Charles Goes, and his daughter Heather; William Goes and his wife Jane, and their children, Ryan and Nikki. Visitation will be held at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home, 100 Lake Pointe Drive, Oshkosh, on Tuesday, February 13 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a short service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Oshkosh Public Museum or the Salvation Army.
