David L. Zuern, age 80, of Oshkosh, passed away on Sunday, December 26, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center. He was born in Mayville, the son of Elsmer and Lillie Johnson Zuern. In June 1956 he married Rosemary George.Dave came to Oshkosh in 1948 and attended Oshkosh State Teachers College. He left there to serve over two years in the United States Marine Corps. He returned to Oshkosh and finished at Oshkosh State University with a BS degree in secondary education, English and Social services. He taught in the English Department at OSU in 1955-56. In the fall of 1956 he started at Winnebago County Welfare Department, now called Winnebago Human Services. He received his Masters Degree in Social work from U-W Madison in 1963. He retired in 1996. David was very active in many organizations including UW-Oshkosh Athletics Hall of Fame, UW-Oshkosh National O Club, UW-Madison Alumni Association, Fields of Honor Military Vets Museum, Kiwanis Club, EAA, Oshkosh Memorabilia Club the R. Atkinson Fox Society, Collectors Clique, Charles Lindbergh Collectors Society, Winnebago County Historical and Archaeological Society, Wisconsin State Historical Society, National Trust for Historic Preservation. Dave and his wife bought and restored the Brooklyn #4 Hook and Ladder Firehouse which is a historical landmark.Dave was known for his love of hunting, fishing, gardening and caring for the birds. He was also on avid sports enthusiast.He is survived by his loving wife Rosemary, his brother Robert of Albany, GA., his sister Rosemarie Armour of Springfield, Virginia. He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews.Dave was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Vivian Dapp and Virginia Hackbarth, and his in laws Ken and Vera George.Funeral services will be held on Thursday December 30, 2010 at 6 p.m. at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Homes-Westside with Rev. Dan Gibson officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday at the funeral home from 3 p.m. until the service. Full Military honors will be performed at the conclusion of the funeral at the funeral home. Burial will be in Eureka Cemetery.A memorial has been established in Davids name UW-Madison alumni Club, Fields of Honor Military Vets Museum, EAA, Oshkosh Memorabilia Club, Winnebago County Historical & Archaelogical Society, Wisconsin State Historical Society, National Trust for Historic Preservation or the charity of your choiceSpecial thank you to the staff at Mercy Medical Group and Rehabilitation Center for the wonderful care given to Dave.
