Donald R. Christman Sr., was called to be with the Lord surrounded by his loving family on Monday, November 4, 2013, at Evergreen Retirement Community-Creekview. He was born on September 17, 1922 in Gary, IN the son of Aura and Jennie (Cathcart) Christman. He married Helen Holappa on September 5, 1942 in Evanston, IL.Donald graduated from Highland Park High School in Illinois and later he continued his education at Northwestern University. He proudly served his country by being in the United States Army a part of the 3rd Army, 76th Division, 385 Regiment, 2nd Battalion, headquarters, ammo and Pioneers. During this time he was awarded many medals and other awards including his most recently awarded medal, the Bronze Star. Donald also had many other accomplishments throughout life. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, founded a disc golfing course in Roan Mountain, TN, was a Friends Board Member for the Oshkosh Senior Center for many years, and also was instrumental in starting the Mens club at 1st United Methodist Church in Oshkosh. He also enjoyed fishing, participating in Boy Scouts, going on adventures with Art and Judy Weinert, having breakfast at Mikes with his buddies, and especially loved spending time with his family.Don is survived by his daughter, Nancy (Brad) Green of Oshkosh, WI; sons Glenn Christman also of Oshkosh, Don (Marcia) Christman of Roan Mountain, TN, and Tom (Renee) Christman of Sheboygan, WI; grandchildren, Holly King, Kimberly (Vince) Hitchew, Shawn (Amanda) Christman, Dane (Nikki) Christman, Heather (John) Quarnstrom, and Samantha, Glenn Jr., Curtiss, Megan, Tom Jr, and Courtney Christman.He is further survived by a brother, Al (Virginia) Christman, sister Chris Buchheit, and 15 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his parents, wife Helen, brothers Victor, Norman, and Edward Christman, and sisters Polli Heyden and Lynnetta Christman.A memorial service for Don will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 10, 2013 at First United Methodist Church (700 W. Linwood Ave.) Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.In lieu of flowers the family would like memorials to be made to either First United Methodist Church or the Disabled Veterans Fund.The family would like to send a thank you to the staff at Evergreen-Creekview and to the doctors that took such good care of Don.
