Dorothy G. Hendrickson

August 7, 1923 — June 10, 2016

Dorothy G. Hendrickson, 92, passed away on Friday, June 10, 2016. She was born August 7, 1923, on a farm near Gardar, North Dakota, a farming community consisting of mostly full-blooded Icelanders. Her parents, John and Gudrun Johnson, were also born near Gardar, but their parents emigrated from Iceland. During Dorothys childhood, Icelandic and English were spoken in her home, but church services and Sunday school were conducted in Icelandic. To make sure she never forgot the Icelandic language she said the Lords Prayer in Icelandic every night before going to bed. Dorothy graduated from high school in Gardar, attended Fargo Business College for a year, and then worked for the Veterans Administration until she married John S. Hendrickson, a Navy veteran, on September 18, 1948. John worked for Goodyear and early in their marriage they were frequently transferred. Their daughter, Sandra, was born in Valley City, North Dakota, and their daughter, Carol, was born in Fremont, Nebraska. While they were living in Milwaukee, John purchased OK Tire & Battery and they made their last move to Oshkosh. Dorothy enjoyed being a homemaker and was a very creative and resourceful person. She enjoyed knitting, a wide variety of handicrafts, decorating, and sewing. She even made her daughter Sandras wedding dress. Dorothy shared many old family photographs and stories about growing up in the Icelandic farming community near Gardar, with her daughters and grandchildren. Her Icelandic heritage was a source of pride and she inspired an appreciation of their Icelandic heritage in her daughters and grandchildren. Over the years she visited and remained close to her family and friends in the Icelandic community where she grew up. During the holidays Dorothy baked traditional Icelandic pastries that she shared with family and friends. Dorothys husband, John, passed away from cancer in 1975 and after his death she worked at C.R. Meyer and Sons until she retired at age 66. She also remained an active member of the First Congregational Church, was a regular Oshkosh Election Official (Poll Worker), and became a member of P.E.O, where she served as guard and historian.Dorothy is survived by her daughters: Sandra (Michael) Morrissette and Carol (Dennis) Radloff; grandchildren: Shawnthea (Matthew) Hartley, Meredith Morrissette, Troy (Marie) Radloff, and step-grandchildren: Ginger (Ryan) Hoagland and Travis Radloff; great-grandchildren: Domenic and Julia Hartley, Beckett Morrissette Cox, and step-great-grandchildren: Connor and Parker Radloff, and Porter and Addison Hoagland; a brother, John (Darlene) Johnson, a sister, Verna Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, and a brother, Magnus Johnson.Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 pm on Sunday, JULY 10, 2016 at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Homes- Westside, 100 Lake Pointe Drive, with Pastor Jack Seville officiating.
