Dr. William D Shepherd

August 24, 1926 — January 26, 2013

William D. Shepherd left his earthly bonds to join the ranks of heaven on January 26, 2013.Dr. Shepherd was born in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin on August 24, 1926, to John Gates and Lillien Steffeck Shepherd. He grew up in the Ladysmith, Kennan and Park Falls areas, sometimes spending the winters in Biloxi, Mississippi, while his father practiced many trades. The family eventually settled in Park Falls, where his father established his Chiropractic practice.William began his legacy of public service as a youth. He was involved in the Conservation Corps during high school, and worked with his peers to plant trees and perform other conservation efforts near Park Falls. He graduated from Park Falls High school at age 16, and enrolled in the Army Signal Corps, as he was too young to join the regular army. He spent 6 months in Duluth with the Signal Corps, and then attended Milwaukee Teachers College for a year, with his brother, Jim. Shortly after college, he was drafted, and served as a corporal in Fort Sheridan, Illinois until 1947 . After his service in the army, he was employed by the Corning Glassworks company in Corning, New York. He then attended the University of Wisconsin Madison, where he earned his Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering, graduating in the summer of 1948. That summer, William went to Davenport, Iowa, to a celebration with his mother and father at Palmer College of Chiropractic, and decided on the spot that he would follow in his fathers footsteps and become a Doctor of Chiropractic. He graduated from Palmer College in 1951, and practiced as an intern for Dr. Menenga in Marshfield for one year. In 1952, after looking around Wisconsin at possible locations, he chose Oshkosh as the place where he would start his Chiropractic practice. His first office was above Woolworths on Main Street. In 1957, Dr. Shepherd purchased the red and white house on the corner of Irving Avenue and Franklin Street, and relocated his practice there. In 1976, he purchased the Red Lantern building on the corner of Jackson Street and Irving Avenue, and built the office that is now Garcia Tax Service.Dr. Shepherd became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in 1957, and met his wife, Miss Janet Swope, in the church choir. They married in 1960. Dr. Shepherd served as both a Deacon and an Elder in his church. He also contributed to the community through the Tuesday Noon Kiwanis Club, where he was a 50 year member. He was a member of the International Chiropractic Association, and the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association, who awarded him Chiropractor of the Year in 1985. He practiced until 1999 , and during his retirement, he volunteered his services to the homeless at the Saint Francis Community Free Clinic, part of Father Carrs Place 2 B, giving chiropractic care to all who came every Thursday for many years.Dr. William Shepherd is survived by his daughter Ann (Danny Marin), Tucson, AZ; granddaughters Carolyn and Janna; grandson William Marin, his brother Jim, and sister, Leta Gerber, Park Falls, niece Elyn (John Schloer), and many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
