Elizabeth Anne Horton

February 14, 1924 — July 19, 2010

Elizabeth Anne (Betty) Horton, 86, of Oshkosh died Monday, July 19, 2010 at Lakeshore Manor in Oshkosh. She was born February 14, 1924 in Pittsburgh, PA, the daughter of the late Joseph and Carolyn (Cretors) Stobart. Betty grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and received a nursing degree from Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh. While on vacation in Florida with relatives, she met her future husband (Eugene Garner Horton) who was on leave from the Army. They were married in Oklahoma on October 5, 1944. Betty stayed in Oklahoma while Garner returned to his duties in the Army in Germany., Betty and Garner moved to Garners home state of South Dakota upon his return from Germany. Their three children, Kathy, Randy and Sharla were all born in Huron, South Dakota. In 1963 the family moved to Oshkosh where Garner took a position at University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh. Garner preceded her in death on November 8, 1988.Betty took her role as nurse and caretaker very seriously. She took opportunities to serve as a lead obstetrics nurse, college nurse, nurse for various physicians and working at Red Cross blood drives. Her generous caring and nurturing spirit spilled over into her family life (particularly her love of her granddaughters Callie and Danielle) and life-long friendships. She always seemed to graciously put the needs of others ahead of herself. Betty enjoyed a number of activities - fishing for crappies, love of nature - particularly birding, love of animals, the challenges of crossword puzzles, reading the latest mystery book, games and bridge. Collecting nutcrackers was her most passionate pastime. Being creative was her hobby - whether crafts, cards, gifts, baking, drawing, painting (for which she received a number of State Fair ribbons) or gardening. She was a true NASCAR fan as well. She was also a charter member of the Jenny Marvin Antiquists, and member of Faculty Dames and Eastern Star. Her survivors include two daughters, Kathy (Kasy) King of Appleton, Sharla (Gary) Norkofski of Oshkosh, a son Randall Horton of Appleton, and two grandchildren Danielle (fiance Dan Sleik) and Callie (special friend Gary Lamp) Norkofski of Oshkosh.Special thanks to Lakeshore Manor and Affinity Hospice Care for their kindness and caring of our mother during her fight with Alzheimers.A memorial service for Betty will be held Thursday, July 22, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at Lakeview Memorial Park, (2786 Algoma Blvd) Oshkosh, Rev.
