Gilbert A. Chapin

Gilbert Alan Chapin, age 75, of Oshkosh, WI passed away at home after a long struggle with cancer on August 19, 2018 with his loving wife at his side. He was born to Clare and Lucille Chapin on May 21, 1943 in Morrison, IL. Gil graduated from Morrison High School and went on to Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois and graduated with a degree in History. After Augustana he went on to get a M.A. in Political Science from the University of Iowa. He met his wife Mary Ellen at the local ice cream shop and knew then he would marry her. Gil served in the U.S. Army from 1968-1970. When he returned from Vietnam they wed on June 23, 1973.

Gil always loved politics and while living in Grand Island, NE, he ran for Congress. He had a knack for listening to others and bringing humor to any situation. His favorite thing to do was ride on his motorbike around to local parks and lakes where he would stop to contemplate.

Gil is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen; three children: Elizabeth (Bob) Gordon, Quakertown, PA, Jane (Randy) Schmiedel, Oshkosh, and Mary (Luke) Weber, Menasha; five grandchildren: Ashley, Alan, Alex, Veanna and Caden; his mother, Lucille Chapin, Morrison, IL, who recently turned 104; a brother, Jere (Nancy) Chapin, Ripon; two nieces and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his father Clare Chapin and a brother, David Chapin.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. noon Thursday, August 23, 2018, at the Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home-Westside, 100 Lake Pointe Drive, Oshkosh. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. Thursday until the time of the service. Interment will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Oshkosh.
