Gloria Underwood

November 2, 1925 — May 11, 2016

After 90 years of tirelessly living a fulfilling life as a daughter, sister, spouse, mother, grandmother and friend, Gloria M. Underwood, with family and friends nearby, peacefully departed this world Wednesday, May 11, 2016.Glorias years spent in Anaconda, Montana, where she was born November 2, 1925 the younger daughter of Jarl and Jennie (Anderson) Oster, provided some of her most treasured memories. That time was spent with her older sister Vivian, cousin and brother in spirit Jerry Nagle and numerous friends and relatives. She first learned to play the piano there, even performing for First Lady Lou Hoover. She forever had a love of classical music that she passed on to her children.Gloria graduated from Highland Park High School, Highland Park, Michigan in June 1943. She continued her education pursuing a major in Physical Education, Health, and Recreation at then Michigan State College in East Lansing, MI. She shared fond memories of being a summer camp counselor and participating in events with her sorority sisters. She was physically active and always a team player. Her circle of friends grew through classmates and membership in the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She remained active in the sorority long after graduation maintaining many of these friendships until now. Following graduation, she taught at Battle Creek and Lourdes High Schools. It was at Michigan State that she met her future husband, Norbert Underwood of Milwaukee, a returning decorated WWII veteran. They married in June of 1948 and spent the next 50 years together. They moved to Wisconsin in 1949, where Norbert was employed by the Department of Natural Resources. Glorias tolerations were frequently challenged because Norb would return home from a day afield with various snakes, frogs, walking stick-insects and other critters to the amusement and education of their children.Gloria could often be found in her kitchen where regular holiday meals were prepared and she could also express her beloved Swedish heritage. In spite of their time-consuming preparations, her Swedish meatballs, Swedish pancakes and Swedish rye bread were the best. They were greatly enjoyed by everyone, from the oldest child to the youngest great-grand child.Glorias children and family were extremely important to her. She made many sacrifices to provide for her family and constantly worried about them. There was no doubt how much she loved and wanted the best for them. People who knew her understood how much she cared.Gloria gave generously of her time through volunteer activities with Cub Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Girl Scouts, Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, the Oshkosh Senior Center, Bethel Home and Mercy Medical Center. As a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church she was a greeter at weekly services and a volunteer at the Lenten fish fry. She enjoyed hours spent with her bridge club and her breakfast group friends. She is survived by her five children: Thomas (Melissa) Underwood of Oshkosh, Susan Jansen of Oshkosh, Joan Underwood Fallon (Bruce Leroy) of Plymouth, WI, Karen Wolbers of Lake Bluff, IL, Barbara (Charles) Misasi of Frisco, TX, ten grandchildren: David, Matthew, Alison, Andrew, Aimee, Roberta, Alyssa, Gregory, Robert, and Dana and three great-granddaughters, Eva, Abigail, and Madeline. She is also survived by three cousins, Kurt Hellberg, Karin Cole, and Caryl Pozega along with nieces and nephews.Gloria was appreciative of those who tended to her needs. The family would like to thank the staff of Oakwood Manor, Heartland Hospice and especially to trusted friend and caregiver Susan King.Interment with her husband and infant son, Robert, will take place privately at Lakeview Memorial Park. A celebration of her life, with family, extended family and friends will be held at St. Raphael's Catholic Church on Saturday, July 16, 2016. Visitation will be at 11:30 AM with a prayer service to follow at 12:00 PM. A luncheon will be held at St. Raphael's after the service.
