Herbert Louis Grunwald

Herbert Grunwald passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center. Born in the Town of Caledonia on April 28, 1921. He was the son of Louis and Estelle (Porath) Grunwald. He married Rita (Freiberg) Grunwald on September 7, 1966 in Las Vegas. They recently celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary.Herb graduated from Oshkosh High School and was class president in 1939. He attended Oshkosh State Teachers College and then later attended and graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Madison in 1948. He also graduated from US Navy Preflight School at Iowa City, Iowa.He was a veteran of WWII from 1942 to 1947 as a lieutenant in the US Navy. He belonged to the VP Black Cat Squadron and flew patrol squadrons as a naval navigator. He continued to serve in the Naval Officer Reserve Unit for many years.Herb was self-employed for many years as the owner of Oshkosh Shirt Laundry and Richmond Cleaners. He retired from the United States Post Office in 1979 after 26 years of service as an accountant.Left to love and cherish his memory are his children, Craig Grunwald of Oshkosh; Colonel Scott (Debbie) Grunwald of Santa Clarita, CA; also Chris Freiberg of Oshkosh; and Mark (Bonnie) Freiberg of Stevens Point, WI. Grandchildren: Melanie and James Grunwald of Santa Clarita, CA; Lindsay, Ryan and Jacob Grunwald and their mother Iris Jacobson of Oshkosh. Sarah Freiberg of Newport Beach, CA and Atty. Andrew (Crystal) Freiberg of Cleveland, TN; his sister, Nancy Hallman of Omro and special cousin Marian (Ralph) Jaeger. Also three sisters-in-law, Trevelen Hansen of Pewaukee; Margaret Hansen of Oshkosh and Rose (Grunwald) Zielke of Oshkosh and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Ralph Grunwald, Donald Hansen, David Hansen and DuWayne Hansen and three sisters, Elaine Hansen, Patsy Hansen and Lois Hansen.He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and served for many years as an usher and council treasurer.Funeral services will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church (1206 Ontario St) on Saturday October 9, 2010 at 5:00 PM with Rev. Paul Lidtke officiating. Family and friends may call at the church on Saturday from 4:00 PM to the time of service. Entombment will be at Lake View Memorial Park with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted for Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Mercy Medical Center Ostomy Support Group.
