James John Martin

James J. Martin, 87, of Oshkosh, passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 surrounded by his loved ones at his home. He was born on August, 30, 1928 to the late Peter and Anna (Greiten) Martin in Milwaukee. He married Elaine Patzlaff on November 21, 1950 in Dubuque, IA.Jim graduated from Pulaski High School in Milwaukee and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army after being drafted. Jim served for several years and served active duty in the Korean War, but ended up being stationed in Germany. During his time in the army, Jim advanced to the rank of SGT. E. Five being the leader of his unit.When he returned from war, Jim became a steamfitter for the Local Union 206 in Fond du Lac, WI where he was the president for several years. He then became a part of the Local 400 in Wisconsin where he worked for 36 years until his retirement.Jim was an avid hunter, fisherman, and joke and story teller. He enjoyed playing cards, traveling to Ft. Meyers Beach, FL for many years, and going to the trailer in the pines in Red Granite where he always enjoyed a few manhattans.Jim was a member of the American Legion Post 40, Veteran of foreign wars, B.P.O.E. Elk post 292, and long time member of Grace EV. Lutheran Church. He was much honored to be a supporter of the steamfitter apprenticeship committee for 25 years and to have been a part of the 2015 Honor Flight.He is survived by his wife: Elaine; son: Jim (Julie); grandson: Chad (fiance Theresa); and great granddaughter: Kaylee Martin. Jim is further survived by sister in law: Barbara Meuler and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Dorothy (Lyle) Smith and Evelyn (Clem) Andre; and brothers in law: Evert (Elaine) Patzlaff and Eugene Meuler.A memorial service will be held for James at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 18, 2016 at Grace Ev. Lutheran Church (913 Nebraska St.) with Rev. Jeffrey Duquaine officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Full military honors will be at the church following the service.The family would like to thank the staff at Eden Meadows and the Affinity Hospice nurses for the care they gave to Jim. They also would like to send a special thank you to Joan and Roxi for all the love and support they gave and to Dave for all the little extras he did.
