James Joseph Flood

James J. Flood, 83, of Oshkosh, died in Florida on April 16, 2016. He was born in Racine, Wisconsin on June 2, 1932, a son of Thomas and Martha (Volz) Flood. On August 22, 1953 Jim married Gretchen von Germeten in Racine.Jim served in the U.S. Army from 1954-56, stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri and Okinawa, Japan. He received his undergraduate and masters degrees from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he competed in intercollegiate basketball. His doctorate was earned at the University of Northern Colorado. From 1957 until 1965, he taught and coached in the Oshkosh Public Schools. From 1965 until his retirement he worked at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh as a Professor and Administrator. Jim also served as the mens track and cross country coach, earning NAIA District 14 Track Coach of the Year honors five times and Cross Country Coach of the Year twice. In 1974 Jim was named Director of Mens Athletics, and held that position until 1987 when he became the Assistant Chancellor for University Relations, with administrative responsibility for alumni affairs, government relations, news bureau, publications, media relations, speakers bureau and special events. He served in that position until his retirement in 1995. He was elected to the UW-Oshkosh Titan Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.Prior to his retirement, Jim was active in community affairs. He held several positions in United Way campaigns over the years, and was the 1991 general campaign chairman. He also served as regional co-coordinator for Wisconsin Special Olympics, with lead responsibilities for winter and spring competitions. He was a member of the Oshkosh Citizens Advisory Council, the Oshkosh Human Relations Council, and the EAA Foundation Friendship Committee. He was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church, and Post 70 of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Titan Booster Club and the National O Club at UW-Oshkosh.In retirement, Jim and his wife, Gretchen, continued to travel extensively in the United States and overseas. They especially enjoyed visiting their four children and their families. Jim also maintained his life-long interest in all sports. He was an enthusiastic fan of the UW-Oshkosh Titans, the Badgers, the Packers and the Olympic games. Over the years Jim enjoyed playing basketball, tennis and golf.Survivors include three sons, James (Kim) Flood of Charlotte, North Carolina, Brian (Julie) Flood of Wilmette, Illinois, William (Diane) Flood of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; a daughter Colleen (Rick) Vosberg of Winfield, Illinois; grandchildren Rachel, Jake, and Sarah Flood of Charlotte, North Carolina, Hannah and Tracy Flood of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Mitchell Vosberg of Winfield, Illinois, and Catherine Flood of Wilmette, Illinois. Also surviving is a brother, Lawrence Flood of Detroit, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gretchen, parents, three brothers, Thomas, Frank and Jerry Flood, and four sisters, Ruth Diener, Katherine Moore, Helen Petersen, and Alice Hammond.A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held in St. Marys Catholic Church located at 605 Merritt Avenue in Oshkosh on Thursday May 26 at 11:00 am. Family and friends may attend the visitation at St. Marys preceding the service between 9:30 and 11:00 am.In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the construction of the UW-Oshkosh Athletics Hall of Fame Room through the UW-Oshkosh Foundation (625 Pearl Avenue, Suite 230, Oshkosh, WI 54901). Contributions to the James J. Flood Memorial Fund (Account #7570) will help create a multi-purpose location in Kolf Sports Center that celebrates UW-Oshkoshs Hall of Fame and hosts receptions and gatherings.
