James Lee Terrell

July 31, 1950 — February 8, 2022

James “Jimbo” L. Terrell, age 71, passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. Jim was born on July 31, 1950, to the late Clyde Barnett and Marilyn Jane (Schwantz) Terrell.

Jim grew up in Oshkosh as a member of First English Lutheran Church. He attended Oshkosh High School where he was a member of the Acapella choir, once touring in Europe for 18 days. His singing voice had descended from his family, which had lived in the area for generations. Jim spent his childhood playing on the land now known locally as "Terrell's Island". He enlisted in the Navy after high school and was honorably discharged after his service.

He loved a good day of hard work and spent his career driving truck, steel working and fixing airplanes before retiring. Even then, he continued to drive for Uber part-time because he loved driving so much. He also enjoyed fishing, collecting and restoring vintage mopeds, motorcycles, and radios, and visiting estate sales and flea markets hawkishly searching for the next “Deal of the Day"! He was a frequent guest at old car shows (Iola anyone?) and a die-hard Packer fan.

Jim was a gentle, kind, and selfless soul - often going out of his way to help others. He was a proud supporter of St. Jude, Wisconsin Public Radio, and his daughter’s nonprofit, Flat Closure Now. He was an incredibly loving, understanding, and patient father and grandfather, handling unfortunate events with great compassion, wisdom, and faith. As he would say, "no worries".Time with his children and grandchildren brought him the most joy of all. Jim conquered addiction to cigarettes and alcohol later in life and gained more years with them because of it. His family will fondly remember his barbeques and his love of a warm, summer day.

His loss leaves a scar on the hearts of all who loved him; may he live on as we carry his light and memory in each of us.

Jim is survived by his three children: Emily (Mark) Hopper, Tyler (Sarah Scott) Terrell, Nicole (George Swietlicki) Good; grandchildren: Mia Hopper, Taylor Swenson, Riley, Sophie and Milo Hagey, Elijah Kratz, Sita Wagner; soulmate: Libby Terrell; sister-in-laws: Rosemary Terrell and Jan Dellwo; niece, Holly (Matthew) Washburn; nephews, Jeremy (Marcy) Terrell and Andy (Sara) Terrell; aunt, JoAnn Schwantz, and numerous cousins, friends and co-workers. He was further preceded in death by his brother, John Terrell and his brother-in-law, Tom Dellwo.
