Jerry Dean Smerling

Jerry D. Smerling, age 71, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, November 17, 2015. He was born on December 2, 1943, in Berlin, WI, a son of the late Henry and Helena (Karst) Smerling. He married Beverly Barber in August 9, 1969, who celebrated their 46th anniversary this year.Jerry honorably served his country in the Red Arrow Division in the National Guard and was a long time member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church. Jerry retired as a Journey man Electrician with the IBEW-Local 577 and also with Boldt Construction. Jerry enjoyed going to events such as flea markets and auctions.He is survived by his wife: Beverly; brothers: Larry and Roger (Tracy) Smerling; sister: Roxann (Dave) Biffert; sister-in-law: Janice (Glenn) Heugel; brother-in-law: Roger Barber; nephews: David Biffert, Carson and Lucas Roethig, Robbie (Veronica) Heugel, Nicholas (Beth) Heugel, Kaden Gaedtke, Isaac Kamikawa; nieces: Brittany (Jesse) Vanderbilt, Skylar Smerling, Larryn Smerling, Claire Roethig, Deeann (Fred) Stadler, Jodee (Bob) Lunowa, Kristine (Tyson) Kamikawa, Nancy (Ross) Gaedtke, Isabelle Kamikawa, Lily Kamikawa, Jessica (Joe) Roethig, Candace Smerling. He is further survived by his cousin: Ronald Karst and many Smerling and Barber cousins and many good friends.Jerry was preceded by his parents; uncles: Jacob (Betty) Karst and Victor Karst, and his in-laws.A funeral service will be held for Jerry at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 4, 2015 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church, 1526 Algoma Blvd. Oshkosh, with Rev. Nathan Ericson officiating. Visitation will be held at church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be at Burdick Cemetery in Omro where full military honors will take place.In lieu of flowers a memorial is being established.
