John David Winter

April 19, 1937 — March 6, 2009

John David Winters life has transcended into a heavenly home after having accomplished the ultimate goal of life on Earth by leaving it a better and more loving place than it would have been without him.Johns life began on April 19, 1937. His new life began on March 6, 2009. We did not lose him for he will live on in the hearts of all who know and love him. The lessons he taught us will help to make our little corners of the world better. I never heard him say an ill word or make a derogatory comment about anyone—well, except for a politician or two.The last year of his life was an example of an incredible effort not to avoid death, but to avoid hurting those who would not be able to make the journey with him.As much as he suffered, in every way possible, it was his love and concern for others that carried him so far. The effort was not wasted for, in the process of dying, he taught all those who were lucky enough to cross his path the importance of living, and loving, and listening, and caring about others more than yourself. His quiet good-humor will live on in the memories of his three children: Thea Ruth Winter, Wendy Louise Winter, and William John Winter as well as his sisters Mildred Evitt and Susan Louise Healey. He leaves behind also Carolyn Jameson Marks whose life he impacted and enriched immeasurably. He found with her a whole new life and more family than he ever bargained for. All of us along with innumerable friends will keep Johns memory alive.John was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Maryann Louise, and his parents William George Winter and Verna Elizabeth Winter.Aviation was a central focus of Johns life and he gave 30 years of service, in different capacities, to the EAA. He also enjoyed him membership in the Quiet Birdmens club both in Oshkosh and San Francisco. To list all of the caretakers, doctors, and nurses who helped in our struggles would be difficult. We cannot thank any of you enough for always going the extra mile and taking the next step. It was a fight that could not be won in any terms other than you gave precious moments to those of us who needed them most.In keeping with the way John lived his life it is requested by those who love him and will miss him most that in lieu of flowers or money donations each of you help enrich the world by reaching out to others whose circumstances may be less or more difficult than your own. Hold someones hand, listen to someone with your heart, read to someone or write a letter of love with love.A memorial service for John will be held at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home (Westside) on Tuesday March 10th at 4 pm. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Tuesday from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
