John Redmond Mckenzie

March 17, 1928 — August 14, 2010

Born on St. Patricks Day, March 17th 1928, to John Redmond and Vivian McKenzie of Helena Montana. Died August 14, 2010 at Parkview Health Center in Oshkosh Wisconsin from complications of Alzheimers Disease. His entire family was with him when he passed.He attended Cathedral High School in Helena and graduated with honorsincluding induction in the National Honor Society. He served in the USMC in the Philippines from 1946 to 1948 attaining the rank of Corporal.He went on to study Pre-Med at Carroll College in Helena graduating in 1951. That year he married the love of his life, Marilyn Joyce Cartwright. They lived a life together as exemplars of marital love and fidelity. They moved to Milwaukee WI where he attended medical school at Marquette University on the GI bill and supplemented his family by working at Pabst brewery. As a Sophomore he received a scholarship from Phizer Pharmaceuticals. He graduated medical school in 1955 after being accepted into Alpha Omega Alpha, the prestigious medical school honor society. He interned at Misericordia Hospital in Milwaukee from 1955 to 1956. John was a general practitioner in Rice Lake Wisconsin from 1956 to 1962, during which time it is said he delivered six hundred babies. He also served as County Coroner in Barron County WI in the late fifties and early sixties. He went back to school and spent his residency training as a radiologist at Milwaukee County Hospital from 1962 to 1965, attaining his certification from the American Board of Radiology in 1966. He practiced as a radiologist in the Fox River Valley for over twenty-five years. During those years John was active on the staff of many hospitals and institutions including; Mercy Medical Center - Oshkosh, Theda Clark Regional Medical Center - Neenah, Riverside Hospital - Waupaca, and Ripon Memorial Hospital, Ripon. At Mercy Medical Center he served variously as Chief of Staff and Chief of Radiology. He was also a delegate to the State Medical Society of Wisconsin from the Winnebago County Medical Society. He became a fellow of the American College of Radiology in 1980.John was the member of the board of directors of several institutions including; the American Medical Association, the State Medical Society of Wisconsin, the Marquette Medical School Alumni Association, the Oshkosh YMCA, the Paine Art Museum - Oshkosh, and Lourdes High School - Oshkosh, where he delivered a memorable commencement address. He is a Walter Zeit Fellow of the Medical College of Wisconsin.John was an avid sportsman. As a youth he excelled in baseball and basketball. He passed the love of these sports on to his children. He loved the out-of-doors and pursued fishing, hunting, and water-skiing all over Wisconsin. He left many a younger man dazed and defeated on the racket-ball and tennis courts in the Valley. But above all he golfed. He and his wife golfed all over the country and around the world. He was a beauty with a club in his hands facing a difficult lie with doubters looking on.He was 100% Irish and owing to his St Paddys Day birth-date, red hair, and freckled face he carried the nickname Pat for most of his life. He had the gift of Blarney and was known to all as an entertaining raconteur.He was a faithful and committed Catholic. His parents believed in the value of a Catholic education and sacrificed dearly so he could attend Catholic high school and college. He carried on that tradition with his own family. He is preceded in death by his loving mother and father, Vivian and John Redmond McKenzie of Helena Montana and two grand-sons. He is survived by Marilyn, his wife of fifty-nine years, and his eight children; Kathy McKenzie - Green Bay WI, Linda Brammer (Marc) - South Bend IN, Matt McKenzie (Elizabeth) - Los Angeles CA, Patrick McKenzie (Anne) - Green Bay WI, Mary Zmolek (Joseph) - Oshkosh WI, Amy Swanson (Randall) - Oshkosh WI, Terri Gross (Bart) - Brookfield WI, and Sheila Acton (William) - Elmhurst IL. He and Marilyn have twenty-five grand-children and five great-grand-children. His five siblings survive him; David McKenzie (Marian) - La Crosse WI, Janice Morrisette (William) - Springfield OR, Joyce Taylor (James)- Oklahoma City, Judy Kuehlthow (Walter)- Seattle WA, and Tom McKenzie - OR.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday August 18, 2010 at 11 a.m. at St. Jude Parish-St. Vincent Site (216 W. South Park Ave.) with Bishop Robert Morneau officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday August 17, 2010 at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home-Westside from 4-7 p.m and again on Wednesday at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery where military honors will be performed.The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Parkview Health Center for the excellent care it rendered to John in the last times of his life.Prior to his death, he and his wife, Marilyn created an endowed fund to further the research on the causes and treatment for Alzheimers Disease. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to this fund.
