John William Schmidt Jr.

John W. Schmidt, 91, Oshkosh, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Saturday, July 11, 2015. He was born February 10, 1924, in Oshkosh, son of John W. Sr. and Marie (VonHoff) Schmidt. When John turned 19 he enlisted into the U.S. Army, and proudly served our country overseas in the European Theater. After being discharged, John began work as a Route Supervisor for Canteen Food and Vending, which he did for 38 years until his retirement in 1986. Then John became employed with the Oshkosh Area Schools Food Department, and enjoyed his days seeing all the smiley and joyful students, who started to grow on John after the years. John married Ellen Augsburger on June 19, 1971, at St. Paul Church, Oshkosh. John was a member of First English Lutheran Church, Oshkosh, as well as the Oshkosh Patriotic Council, United Veterans Honor Guard, AMVETS a Veterans Organization, Boyscouts, K.B. Club, and served on the board for Sawdust Days. His hobbies included camping and traveling all over the country with Ellen, most particularly to the warm states of California, Texas, Arizona, and Lousiana.John is survived by his wife, Ellen; son, Daniel (Marcia) Schmidt; son-in-law, Al Peil; step-sons: Paul (fianc Debbie Addis), Peter, and Patrick Dodge; grandchildren: Amy (Kevin) Paulick, Lori (Trent) Spiegelberg, Bryan Peil, Nikki (Thias) Shefchik, Stephanie Dodge, Sara (Tom) Helmuth, Josh (Jessie) Dodge, Claire and Wylie Dodge; 6 great grandchildren; a brother, William Schmidt; a sister-in-law, Ann Augsburger; several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Mary Jo Peil; a brother-in-law, Vernon Augsburger and a sister-in-law Joan Schmidt.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2015, at First English Lutheran Church, 1013 Minnesota Street, with Revs. Timothy Greenwald and Martin Ruge officiating. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park, Oshkosh. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the service. Full military honors will be presented by the U.S. Army prior to committal services at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.Johns family would like to extend a very special thanks to the staff at Aurora Hospice for their loving and compassionate care.
