Joyce Elaine Fick

Joyce Elaine (Jones) Fick passed away January 20.Fick was born to Thomas Parry Jones and Sarah McCarter Jones August 5, 1924 in Portage, Wisconsin. Fick graduated from Sheboygan (Wis.) Central High School and earned a bachelors degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While in Madison she met and married Robert (Bob) Fick. Joyce was the principal homemaker while the couple raised a family, first in Janesville, then Sheboygan (1951-55), Manitowoc (1955-1958), Oshkosh (1958-62), Stevens Point (1962-66), Sheboygan again (1966-70) and Oshkosh. During the 1960s she returned to school at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and later UW-0shkosh, to obtain a degree in speech therapy. She worked as a speech therapist in the Berlin (Wis.) public schools.In addition to her work and family, Joyce helped manage and maintain a tree farm in central Wisconsin. She was also a volunteer mediator for Winnebago County for several years, a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO), and active in the Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church for many years. In addition, she was an active learner, traveling, participating in workshop hostels, reading widely and, in later years, taking every opportunity to be an active listener.Fick was preceded in death by Bob (October 2008). She is survived by two sons, Robert Jr. (Mitt) of Portola Valley, Calif., his wife Mary (Reichardt), and their two daughters, Sarah (Jason Vendzules) of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Catherine of San Francisco, Calif. Also son Thomas (Tom), his wife Diane (Jens), and their daughters Martha (Tim Duffy) of Beaverton, Ore., Amanda of Madison, Wis., Emily Fick-Comstock (Michael Comstock) of Charlestown, Mass., and Rachel of Atlanta, Ga. There are two great granddaughters, Grace and Claire Duffy.A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Algoma Boulevard Methodist Church, 1174 Algoma Boulevard, with a reception to follow.Memorials can be made to Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church, 1174 Algoma Blvd Oshkosh, WI 54901, The Joyce Jones Fick Book Fund at the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation, 230 Ohio Street, Oshkosh, Wisconsin 54902 or the PEO c/o Becky Schroeder, 307 W.
