Laverne Carol Schmeling

LaVerne Carol Schmeling, age 93, passed away on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at St. Lukes Hospital in Milwaukee, due to complications from a heart attack, suffered a week ago. She was born on April 13, 1923, a daughter of Carl and Olive (Romlow) Von Hoff. She was married to Vilas Max Schmeling on November 2, 1946 in Oshkosh.LaVerne graduated from Oshkosh High School in 1941 and attended Beauty College in Appleton. Along the way she met and married Max, the love of her life. Her brother Stanley introduced Max to his sister while they were visiting Oshkosh during a military leave from the US Coast Guard.LaVerne opened and operated La Vernes Beauty shop on Highway 45 near Oshkosh for over 35 years. She enjoyed staying connected with her customers and took pride in owning her own business and living independently until her death.La Verne was a lifelong member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ, active in Eastern Star, Noble Ladies, and enjoyed hosting the Shriners for monthly luncheon meetings at her condo. She had a magic touch raising lovely roses in her garden and enjoyed baking and crocheting. Her Christmas cookies will be a difficult void to fill for those who received her annual gift boxes.LaVerne is survived by her son, Charles (Gail) Schmeling, Sun Prairie; her grandson, Andrew (Stephanie) Schmeling, Seattle, WA; sister, Marion (Charles) Beyer, Oshkosh; brothers, Stanley (MaryAnna) Von Hoff, DePere and Doug (Barbara) Von Hoff, Oshkosh, and many nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband of 56 years, Vilas Max Schmeling.A private family service will be held at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Homes- Westside with Rev, Andi Wolf officiating. In lieu of flowers, LaVernes family requests that memorial donations be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607, an organization that both Max and La Verne were dedicated to helping.
