Marjorie M Redlin

February 15, 1913 — January 17, 2008

Marjorie M. (Horne) Redlin, 94, of Oshkosh, started celebrating Eternal Life on January 17, 2008. Jesus enfolded Marges tired body in His loving arms to meet her Lord in heaven. Her earthly life began February 15, 1913 in Pickett, WI, the 3rd child of 5, born to William and Flora Horne.Because Marjories family lived in the country, her sister, who was 20 months older, was kept back a grade so they could walk to school together. They both graduated from Omro High School in 1930.Marjorie then attended Green Lake County Normal School in Berlin, WI for 1 year to earn a teaching certificate and started her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse. For 7 years Marjories classroom consisted of up to 30 children from first through eighth grades. She boarded with different farm families, walking to school every day, starting the wood stove each morning, sweeping up each night and cleaning the blackboards. There was an outside pump for water. The boys outhouse was on one side of the woodshed, with the girls being on the other. There was no electricity, calculators or computers. She was paid $65 a month and quit teaching in April 1938 after her marriage to Ervin W. Redlin, who preceded her in death in November 1989.Marge returned to the school system in 1957 and to full-time teaching in 1964. While tending to her home, raising 4 children and teaching full-time, she attended classes nights, weekends and summers to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in upper education from then Wisconsin State University of Oshkosh in January 1966. She was one of the first to be certified in Wisconsin for Special Education in August 1967 and retired in 1978 after 24 years of teaching.Marjorie was fortunate to be able to travel the world, sometimes with her sister, Ferne Davis. Trips included almost every state in America, as well as Spain, Australia, Great Britain, Canada, China, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Japan and Hong Kong. Because of her love of travel, her children also developed the desire to see the world outside of Oshkosh.Marge was firm, yet loving, and her small stature belied her inner strength. We were blessed to have her as a wonderful mom, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is dearly loved and will be greatly missed.Survivors include 4 children: Wayne (Carole) Redlin, Weston; Lynette (Thomas) Sabott, Oshkosh; Gordon (Jody) Redlin, Appleton; Alice Baker, Neenah; as well as 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and her sister Ferne Davis, Omro. Also preceding her in death: her parents, sister Betty Wightman and brother-in-law Grant, sister and brother-in-law Mabel and Bernard Zarling, brother and sister-in-law Herbert and Jane Horne, brother-in-law Riede Davis, and one grandchild.Marjorie was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Oshkosh and Winnebago County Retired Educators Association. She loved playing the piano, line dancing, square dancing, playing Sheephead, board games and being with her family. Funeral services will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church (761 Florida Ave.) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at 11:30 AM with Rev. Barry Yarbro officiating. Family and friends may call at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home-Eastside on Monday from 4:00 to 7:30 PM and on Tuesday at the church from 10:00 AM to the time of service. Special gratitude is extended to the Creekview South staff during Marjories last week.In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established to Wesley United Methodist Church. The family encourages all Mrs. Redlins former students and their families to come and write remembrances in a notebook.
