Marlyn Roy Jake Vanderhoof, age 89, of Oshkosh, died at Aurora Medical Cente, after a lengthy illness, on Friday, October 30, 2015. He was born on September 29, 1926, in Shiocton, the son and youngest child, of Peter and Susan Vanderhoof. To his friends and family Marlyn was known by his nickname Jake.Jake worked for many years at the Paine Lumber Company in Oshkosh and served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a quiet and somewhat shy man, but always had a pleasant and teasing grin. He did not often talk about himself, but weve been told stories of his swimming ability as a young man, having once saved a young boy from drowning. He was also known as a champion horseshoe player, by his sister Pearls family with whom he lived for several years.Jake was preceded in death by six sisters, Mrs. Grace Christian, Mrs. Idella Knoke, Mrs. Pearl Brawn, Edith Mae Vanderhoof, Mrs. Beatrice Warning and Mrs. Dolores Borgardt. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Andrew and Leonard Vanderhoof. Jake never married, so is survived solely by nieces, nephews and their families, as well as friends.A funeral service for Jake will be held at the Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home at 100 Lake Pointe Drive, in Oshkosh, on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at 3:00 pm with Pastor John Worzala Dumke officiating, military rights will follow. There will be a one hour visitation prior to the time of service for sharing, friendship and memories of Jake. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Jakes nephew Dean Brawn who was Jakes most frequent visitor, as well as his friends and caretakers at Serenity Place where Jake lived for a number of years. Also, a special thank you to Terrie Kragenbrink for the attention and kindness she has shown Jake over the years as his appointed guardian.
