In his career with the United States Postal Service Marvin advanced from clerk to Postmaster and retired from that position in Marion, Wisconsin. He volunteered for the American Red Cross and traveled to New York after 9-11 to assist there, and also on a team supporting fire fighters in Arizona after a major forest fire.

Marvin earned his Woodbadge beads and then continued to serve as staff for Scoutmaster Training. Among other honors he was presented with the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver, the council-level distinguished service award. Marvin also was a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Verna, and their three children: Mark (Michelle) Summerville, Laura Holevatz, and Elizabeth (James) Schmude. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother, Robert Summerville; his sister, Dixie Summerville; and a granddaughter, Shannon Marie Johnson.
