Melvin G. Apell

Melvin G. Apell passed away on January 10, 2011 at St. Marys Hospital in Madison after a brief illness. He was born December 7, 1922 to Melvin and Amanda (Manser) Apell in Chicago and graduated from Oshkosh High School in 1940. He continued his education at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, graduating from UW Medical School in 1946. Residency and Internship were completed at Wisconsin General Hospital in Madison and Herman Keifer Hospital in Detroit.Melvin married Amy Schneider on January 21, 1943. Amy was the love of his life.He was a Captain in the United States Air Force serving as a Pediatrician at Sampson Air Force Base in New York.Dr. Apell began his first private medical practice in Gloversville, NY in 1950. He returned to Oshkosh in 1953 and established the Childrens Clinic of Oshkosh. In 1977 he studied Allergy and Immunology, passed his Boards, and continued to serve the community in this specialty. He served in numerous capacities at Mercy Medical Center, including Chief of Staff in 1969 - 1970. Medicine was more than a career to Dr. Apell and he embraced the opportunity to care for his patients and form relationships with area families. He retired from medicine in June of 1991.He was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother Donald and loving wife Amy. Survivors include daughters Susan (Richard) Fenn, Madison; Elizabeth (William) Nordlund, Frisco, TX; sons Stephen (Cheryl) Apell, Oshkosh; and Scott (MaryAnn) Apell, San Diego, and sister-in-law Lila Apell and family. There are also 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. His family will miss him very much.Melvin was an active member of the community, serving in various capacities of the YMCA, Kiwanis and Rotary Club. He shared a love of the outdoors, including fishing, golfing, boating, gardening, the Green Bay Packers and his beloved UW Badgers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the E.J. Schneider Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Oshkosh YMCA and the Oshkosh Area Humane Society.A private service is planned with Rev. Stephen Powers officiating. Burial will be at Lake View Memorial Park in Oshkosh.
