Melvin Hitchcock

On Wednesday, August 20, 2014, the Lord called the gentle soul of Melvin C. Hitchcock home. Mel was born on September 10, 1931 in Oshkosh to William and Mary (Dichtl) Hitchcock. Mel attended school in Oshkosh. From 1950-1954 he proudly served his country in the US Navy during the Korean War. On May 13, 1959 he married Germaine Polishinski, who preceded him in death on May 27, 2006. Mel was a longtime member of St. Jude the Apostle Parish and he practiced his faith though volunteering at the Oshkosh Senior Center and Fr. Carrs Place 2B for 23 years. His favorite times at Fr. Carrs were the Thanksgiving meals he helped serve to those who would otherwise have gone without. He worked for WI Public Service for 38 years as a lineman. Mel loved to bowl, fish, hunt, play cards with family and friends and work in his beautiful flower gardens.Survivors include sisters-in-law: Marlene Polishinski, Judy (Jerry) Faust and Pat (Cliff) Neubauer and brother-in-law, Bob Schmeidel, all of Oshkosh, as well as many nieces and nephews and his special friend Gail. Preceding Mel in death are his parents, his wife, and Lawrence and Tressie Hitchcock, Marvin and Sarah Hitchcock, Ray and Jeanette Hitchcock, William M. Sonny Hitchcock, Harold and Monica (Hitchcock) Berrell, Doug and Irene (Hitchcock) Kundiger, Dolores Hitchcock, Audrey Hitchcock.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Jude the Apostle Parish, St. Vincent Church, 1225 Oregon St, on Monday, August 25, 2014, at 11:00 am with the Rev. Michael Warden officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to share in a time of support from 9:30 am until the time of the Mass. Burial will be at Lake View Memorial Park accompanied by military honors. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Parish, Fr. Carrs or the Oshkosh Senior Center.
