Norbert A. Dahlke

September 24, 1923 — July 12, 2012

Norbert A. Dahlke was born to Arnold and Bernice Dahlke of Neshkoro, Wisconsin, on September 24, 1923. He enjoyed an idyllic small town childhood with his three sisters, Anita B. Dahlke, Shirley Erickson, and Sandy Van Ryne, and his younger brother, Charles Dahlke. Norb graduated valedictorian of his high school class of thirteen, received a scholarship to attend UW Madison for pre-vet training, and went on to receive his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Iowa State University, where he lettered in basketball his junior and senior years. Also as a student, during World War Two, he served in the Army Specialized Training Program. He also served as a waiter at Tri-Delta Sorority House, and that was where he met the love of his life, Louise Mary Stuckert of Whitefish Bay. In 1946, after marrying, they established a veterinary practice in Waupaca, Wisconsin, raising a family of three (Chuck Dahlke of Oshkosh, Sandy McKellips, and Cindy Williams.) The practice was successful for 17 years, at which time Norb became CEO of the Wisconsin Feeder Pig Marketing Cooperative, where he remained until starting his own livestock business, Northern States Feeder Pigs of Saulk Center, Minnesota in 1978. Meanwhile Norb and Louise had moved from Waupaca to Manitowoc, continuing their many passions, including duplicate bridge, into and beyond Norbs 1984 retirement. Together, Louise and Norb became ACBL life masters, traveling the U.S. and Canada to attend tournament after tournament. They also shared their enjoyment of reading, politics, and an interest in financial investment strategy. A skilled hunter, fisherman, and sporting clays, trap, and skeet enthusiast, Norbert was always ready for the company of the old gang of friends, and he also shared these interests with his son, Chuck. After caring for Louise during her decade of Alzheimers, Norb moved in with Chuck and Chucks girlfriend, Abby Frucht and her sons Alex and Jess Zimmerman. Louises death in 2005 was a deep and enduring sorrow for Norb, but along with his devoted grandson and granddaughter-in-law. Chris (formerly of Oshkosh) and Diane Dahlke, he spent many more good years arguing politics and enjoying nature and the outdoors. A lifelong conservationist, Norbert joined and made major donations to the Nature Conservancy, The National Wildlife Federation, and Ducks Unlimited. He did the same for the Republican Party, the Mayo Clinic Foundation, and later, the Alzheimers Association. In addition he served as a board member for the State of Wisconsin Veterinary Health Committee, was on the State of Wisconsin Agricultural Animal Health Committee, was a member of the American Veterinary Association, the Black Wolf Wildlife Association, and the NRA. He was president of the National Feeder Pig Disease Association and the Wisconsin Valley Veterinary Medical Association. He sat on the board of directors for Riverside Hospital in Waupaca, was a certified director for the American Contract Bridge League, and was named Man of the Year for the Manitowoc Gun Club at the age of 70. Norb spent his last few months at Evergreen Manor, and died peacefully at Mercy Medical Center at 4:30 p.m. July 11th. Donations to the Alzheimers Foundation are what Norb would have most appreciated. A memorial service will be held at Konrad-Behlman Funeral home at 402 Waugoo Avenue, Oshkosh, at 11 a.m. on Monday August 6th.
