Raymond G Scharpf

March 31, 1927 — November 3, 2015

Raymond G. Scharpf passed peacefully from his earthly home to his eternal home in heaven on November 3, 2015. Ray was born March 31, 1927 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin to Ben and Erva Scharpf. He moved to Oshkosh at an early age. He joined the U.S. Navy when he was 18, serving in World War II. After returning from the service, he moved to Milwaukee where he graduated from Marquette University. In 1950, Ray married Ruth Gebhard in Oshkosh. He worked for his father's business, Scharpf's Office Supplies, later buying and operating it. Afterward, Ray went to work for Scharpf's Uniforms where, along with his wife and sons, he operated six uniform stores throughout eastern Wisconsin. Ray was active with the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce, Oshkosh Area United Fund, Boy Scouts of America (with which he was an Eagle Scout), First Presbyterian Church, and the American Red Cross.Ray had a wonderful circle of friends and was a family man at heart. Together, Ray and Ruthie celebrated 65 years of happy marriage. After raising their family and retirement, they travelled throughout the world, taking hot air balloon trips through the French Alps, cruises through European ports, and sailing in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. They enjoyed winters in Arizona and Destin, Florida. He, with Ruthie at his side, made friends on every trip. Together they loved to entertain and throw parties. He was eager to help anyone who needed a ride, a meal, or a caring note of encouragement. Ray had many hobbies, including making grandfather clocks, fishing, and creating life-like porcelain dolls with his wife. Ray had great wit, even in his last days.Ray is already missed by his wife Ruth, his sons Steve (Judy) Scharpf, Mike (Sara) Scharpf, Thomas (Debra) Scharpf, all of Oshkosh, and Ben (Barbara) Scharpf of Middleton, Wisconsin. He was grandfather to five grandchildren, Aaron (Katie) Scharpf of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, Andrea (Andy) Dahl of Oshkosh, Eric (Jeana) Scharpf of Madison, Wisconsin, Emily Scharpf of Chicago, Illinois, and Mary Scharpf of Middleton. He is further survived by six great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Karley, Landon, Jaxson, Avery and Owen, and a sister LaVerne Mortensen of Oshkosh. The family wishes to extend their deep appreciation to Aurora VNA Hospice for all of their support in the care of Ray. A memorial service for Ray will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church (110 Church Ave) with the Rev. Tom Willadsen officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to the service time. In lieu of flowers, gifts be made in Ray's memory to First Presbyterian Church in Oshkosh or a charity close to one's heart.
