Dr. Robert E. Doc Herman, 83, of Oshkosh passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday morning September 5, 2006. He was born in the Town of Union Wisconsin on February 26, 1923 the son of Edward and Mary Ann Huber Herman. On May 1, 1946 he married Helen C. Scholtz. She preceded him in death on February 12, 1999 after 53 years of marriage.Doc was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Oshkosh. He had attended Oshkosh State Teachers College, the University of Wisconsin Madison, and the Marquette University School of Dentistry graduating with his dental degree. He was a member of the Delta Sigma Delta Fraternity. After graduation he entered the U. S. Navy on November 20, 1943 as a dental surgeon with the rank of Lt jg. He served with the Occupation Forces in Japan from November 1946 to May 1948. He opened his practice in Oshkosh in the Woolworth Building, and then moved into the Medical Arts Building practicing there until his retirement on June 1, 1988 after 42 years of self employment. He and Helen raised four sons. He was a 55 year member of the American Legion, a past Post Commander of the Cook Fuller Post 70, and served for 54 years as the Post Athletic Officer. He was also the editor of the American Legion Post 70 newsletter for 34 years. He was a member of the 40 & 8 and the Last Mans Club since 1965. He had been the president, secretary and treasurer of the Posts Last Mans Club II. He organized the State Legion Baseball Association in 1962. He was the Region V director of the State Baseball Association for 25 years, and the state president for 12 years. He was the national representative in charge of four regional National American Legion baseball tournaments. He served as the Vice President of three Wisconsin American Legion State Conventions (1969, 1980, & 1986). He represented the Wisconsin American Legion Baseball Association at ten annual National Baseball Conferences. Doc was the president of the Wisconsin State Bowling Tournament twice in Oshkosh. He was an avid sportsman and member of Whitetails Unlimited, and Ducks Unlimited Associations. He was also a longtime Packer and Badger fan.Doc is survived by his brother, Ronald Herman of Seymour, WI, four sons, James (Carol) Herman of Algonquin, IL, Gary (Debra) Herman of Oshkosh, Richard (Cindy) Herman of Louisville, KY, and Steve (Debbie) Herman of Oshkosh, eleven grandchildren, Adam (Cassie) Herman, Dawn (Jim) Freiberg, Heather Herman (Active USN), Lisa Herman, Stephanie Herman, Ben Herman, Kevin (Chris) Herman, Andrew Herman, Thomas Herman, Jason Herman and Amy Herman, and six great grandchildren, Zachary Herman, Emily Herman, Gabrielle Freiberg, Jacob Freiberg, Kaila Freiberg and Brady Herman. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.His funeral will be Saturday September 9, 2006 at 11:00 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Marvin Ahlborn officiating. Entombment will be in Lake View Memorial Park. Family and friends may call at the Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home-Eastside on Friday from 4-8 PM and at the church on Saturday from 10 AM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciated memorials in Docs name.
