Roland Fred Gruendemann

October 15, 1915 — May 18, 2006

Roland Fred Gruendemann, 90, was called home to heaven this Thursday May 18, 2006, from the Evergreen Retirement Community where he resided for the past 3 years, after a month of failing health. He was born in Forestville, WI, on October 15, 1915 the son of August and Hermina (nee Detjen) Gruendemann. His family moved to Powers, MI where he met and married Ruth Brukardt at the Grace Ev. Lutheran Church on June 14, 1936. They would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this year. Roland graduated as the Valedictorian of the Powers/Spaulding High School in Powers, MI in 1933. After his marriage he worked as a logger in the Upper Peninsula. He and Ruth then purchased a small farm in Omro, WI. He also at that time worked for the Diamond Match Co. and Universal Foundry both in Oshkosh. They then moved on to Redgranite, WI where he again farmed, was a milk hauler, and trucked pickles in Lohrville. Some years later, they moved to Rural Oshkosh and Roland was employed by the Damrow Brass Co. in Fond du Lac, WI and later he went to work for the Leach Co. in Oshkosh from which he retired in 1977.Roland and his wife, Ruth, traveled to every state except Alaska. Early on in their travels he built his own truck camper and drove it to many Southern States. He enjoyed constructing an A-frame cabin on their land up north. He cut posts, lumber, hunted and enjoyed being outdoors. They spent many of their winters in the McAllen/Mission, TX area in later years. Roland was on the Winnebago Lutheran Academy Penary and Executive Board, Zion Ev. Lutheran Church Council, played on their dartball team and served as an usher. He also served as a 4-H adult leader.Roland is survived by his wife, Ruth who resides at Evergreen Retirement Community, a daughter, Marilyn (Donald) Ring of Oshkosh, three sons, David (Kay) Gruendemann of Appleton, Roger (Katherine) Gruendemann of Oshkosh, and Donald (Janet) Gruendemann of Larsen, WI. He is also survived by three sisters, Clara Kahrs of Appleton, Esther (Roland) Bode of Saginaw, MI, and Bertha Wachholz of North Fond du Lac, WI, twelve grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Arvilla Wiese of Gladstone,MI.Rolands funeral will be Tuesday May 23, 2006 at 7:00 PM at the Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home- Westside with the Rev. Lester Fritz of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Van Dyne, WI officiating. Private burial services will be held for the family at the Zion Van Dyne Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 3:00 PM until the time of the service. Memorials may be given for the Zion Ev. Lutheran Church or the Evergreen Retirement Community. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of Evergreen for their wonderful care of Roland these past 3 1/2 years.
