Roland John Stelzner

December 24, 1915 — March 21, 2012

Roland Rollie J. Stelzner, age 96 of Oshkosh died at Evergreen on Wednesday, March 21, 2012. Roland was born in Oshkosh on December 24, 1915, a son of the late John and Mary Beckman Stelzner. He married Eva Bartelt on August 31, 1942 in Kiel, WI.Rolands parents farmed in Weyauwega and following a lightening strike that burned down the house, his family moved to Oshkosh by riverboat. He played basketball with the City League that played against the Oshkosh All Stars and played baseball. He was invited to a try out with the Chicago White Sox, but war broke out following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and Rollie entered the U.S. Army. He was part of the invasion of North Africa, French Algiers and at Anzio Beach for the invasion of Italy where he directed artillery fire. Rollie received the Bronze Star and the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars. He had been employed as a dental technician for many years and then became the dairy manager for Copps Grocery Store until his retirement. He was a very active member of First United Methodist Church and served as a lay leader, past president of the Ambassador Club.Survivors include his wife Eva Stelzner of Oshkosh; two daughters, Susan (Gerald) Folletz of Oshkosh; Kathy (Dennis) Lyons of Waukesha; five grandchildren, David Folletz of Neenah, Kristine Folletz of Oshkosh; Amy (Tim) Troudt of Oshkosh; Ben (Candida) Lyons of Hartland and Charles (Sarah) Lyons of Ashland and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and Irving Stelzner and six sisters, Dorothy Stelzner, Della Grusnick, Ruth Arnold, Alice Witrock, Nora Frederick and Adeline Stelzner. Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church (700 W. Linwood Ave.) on Monday March 26, 2012 at 2:00 PM with Rev. John Hobbins officiating. Family and friends may call at the church on Monday from Noon to the time of service. Interment will be at Lake View Memorial Park. A memorial has been established to First United Methodist Church.
