Sidney Robert Hirschberg

June 6, 1918 — July 27, 2013

On July 27, 2013, Sidney R. Hirschberg Sid, passed away at the Century Oaks Assisted Living Facility in Oshkosh, WI at age 95.Born in Chicago, IL, the only child to Harry and Ruby Hirschberg, he attended high school in Momence, IL and attended the University of Illinois at Champagne until he volunteered for World War II, where he served for five years in the United States Coast Guard stationed on The Cutter Blanco (a three masted schooner, which was formerly the Schlitz Brewery corporate yacht). He married the former Annette Passen, in Chicago, IL on January 19, 1943 and they were happily and faithfully married for 63 years until she preceded him in death on August 28, 2005. Sidney was a man who possessed great curiosity and had a life long interest in promoting interfaith relations between Christians and Jews. He had an insatiable appetite for current events and the discussion of politics, fueled by the fact that he was a voracious reader. He moved from Chicago to Oshkosh after the War to spend a year with his late father, Harry, assisting in the operations of Hirschbergs Department Store on South Oregon Street. He came for a year and stayed a lifetime. After Hirschbergs Department Store, he formed a chain of womens specialty shops around the state of Wisconsin, which were called Jeffreys. He was proprietor of those stores until 1982. During this time he was voted best dressed man in Oshkosh. From that point on, he sold commercial real estate. He was an active member of the community, volunteering for many boards and committees, including serving as president for the following organizations: the Wisconsin Council of Bnai Brith, the Oshkosh Community Chest, and the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce. An avid sailor and golfer, he was a member of the Oshkosh Yacht Club, the Oshkosh Country Club, and Butte des Morts Country Club in Appleton, WI.Up until he was 90 years old, he was able to post a golf score that was no more than his age.Sidney is survived by three sons, D. Jeffrey, Larry (Peggy) and Judd (Susan), five grandchildren, Jeffrey Hirschberg, Rachel Hirschberg Light (Gilead), Jason Hirschberg (Susan), Susan Hirschberg Unger (Daniel), Sasha Hirschberg, and eleven great- grandchildren. The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice, Dr. Alzoubi and his nurses, and the staff of Century Oaks for his care in the last year. Private services were held on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Congregation Bnai Israel. The family requests that donations be made in lieu of flowers in Sidney Hirschbergs memory to the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation.Oshkosh Area Community Foundation230 Ohio Street, Suite 100Oshkosh, WI 54902
