Virginia R. Stevens

Virginia Ruth (Ginny) Stevens passed away on the afternoon of April 11, 2021. Virginia was born to Raymond and Mathilda (Lund) Cummings in Wisconsin Rapids on January 27, 1923. She had two sisters: Bernice who died at birth, and Patricia Pfaffenroth, her lifelong best friend. Virginia and her family moved to Oshkosh in 1927, She graduated from Oshkosh High School in June of 1941.
Virginia married the love of her life and lifelong partner Leland Stevens in Oshkosh on July 6, 1944 and they lovingly spent seventy-one years together until his passing in 2016. Together, they had two sons, Ronald of Oshkosh, and Dr.Gary (Cynthia) of Eagle River, four grandchildren: Kathryn (Mike) and Jennifer (Jarett) Stevens of Oshkosh, Amity (Ron) Mathews of Barron, Wisconsin and Rebecca Stevens (Ken Rieper) of San Antonio, Texas. They also had seven great grandchildren: Lukas, MaKenzie, and Isabella of Oshkosh and Ella, Avery, Rankin and Riordan Mathews of Barron Wisconsin.
She started working for the Wisconsin Telephone Company in 1941 and retired there as a supervisor in the data processing department in 1979.
Virginia loved playing cards, knitting, and doing crafts, and spending time with her family and a close group of friends. She was an avid reader, and after her retirement loved playing Bingo and making frequent visits a casino. During the late 60’s, 70’s, and early 80’s she had a special fondness for spending as much time as possible at a small cottage they owned near Minocqua.
Following her husband’s retirement in 1984 retirement, they sold their cottage, bought a motor home, and spent a couple years touring the United States. In 1986, they traded their life in a motor home for a small home in Fort Myers Beach. They officially became "snowbirds" for the next 20 years; spending their summers in Oshkosh, and their winters in Florida. Lee’s health issues eventually brought them back to Oshkosh on a full-time basis in 2006.
Virginia and her husband were active members of Emmanuel United Church of Christ for well over 60 years.
In 2017, a year after her husband’s death, Virginia moved into assisted living at Gabriel’s Villa in Oshkosh. After suffering a stroke in 2018, they went out of their way to accommodate her so that she could spend remaining years with them.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Her Loving Husband Leland in 2016, her sister Patricia in 2019, her brother-in-law Carlton Pfaffenroth, and her daughter-in-law Sue. She is survived by her sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren listed above as well several nieces and nephews.
The Family would like to express its sincere gratitude to the staff of Gabriel’s Villa and Aurora Hospice Care for their compassion and the kindness they showed Virginia during the final phases of her journey through life. Her special friends Rita and Shirley will never be forgotten.
The family will hold a private service at a later date with Pastor Ronald Mathews officiating. Interment, with her husband Leland, will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Oshkosh.
