d. April 22, 2015

Walter E. Gehrke, 84, of Oshkosh, died April 22, 2015, at Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca. He was born on March 4, 1931, son of Ernest and Sara (Norton) Gehrke. Walter married Marlene Kleveno on August 15, 1955 in Oshkosh. Walter retired from Gilbert Paper Company in 1989 where he worked for over 30 years, providing dedicated service.Walter worked alongside Marlene as owners of Gehrke Marine & Gun Supply.Walter and his loving wife Marlene acquired Gehrkes Marine & Gun Supply in 1983. Gehrkes Marine & Gun Supply was previously owned by Walters parents, Ernest and Sara. Starting the business in 1965, it was originally a Glidden Paint and sporting goods store. Due to the ever changing times, the business would later transition to entirely sporting goods supply. With a prime location on the Fox River, the local fisherman would purchase their fresh bait, rent boats, and obtain boat motor repair. In 1983 in conjunction with the City of Oshkosh re-development project, Gehrkes Marine & Gun Supply relocated to its current location at 1102 N. Main Street. Today, it continues to be a place to go for both gear and fishing advice.Walter was an avid fisherman, enjoyed boating, snowmobiling, stamp collecting, spending time at his farm in Waupaca County, working on boat motors, and above all spending time with his family and friends.Walter is survived by his wife, Marlene; brother in law, Keith (Gail) Kleveno; niece Jennifer Kleveno; and many friends. Walter was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Roxane Surges.Funeral services for Walter will be at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2015, at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Homes-Eastside with Chaplain Jim Frank officiating.
