Carol B. Cameron

November 7, 1931 — April 1, 2026

Oshkosh

Carol B. Cameron, age 94, passed away on the morning of April 1, 2026 at Evergreen Retirement Community. She was born to the late Ferdinand and Flora Below on November 7, 1931 at St Mary’s Hospital in Oshkosh, WI. She married David Cameron on September 12, 1953, and they recently celebrated 72 years of marriage.

Carol graduated from Oshkosh High School and went on to Columbia Hospital Nursing School in Milwaukee to become a registered nurse. She worked in the surgery unit at Columbia for a year and then moved to Evanston Hospital while Dave finished his degree at Northwestern University. They moved back to Oshkosh with Dave taking a job in Neenah and Carol becoming a homemaker for 20 years, raising their four children.

Once the children were of school age she began volunteering in the recovery room at Mercy Medical Center which eventually turned into a part time position. She spent many years volunteering with the Infant Welfare Association, first doing well baby screening and then vision screening. Carol was a Cub Scout leader for Bruce and John and Campfire Girls leader for Julie and Anne and spent many summers as the camp nurse at Camp Hiwela. Carol enjoyed many years as a member of Fireside Antique Club, PEO Chapter AG and was a founding member of Oshkosh Women’s Club. She also held positions on numerous boards supporting the needs of the Oshkosh community.

She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ where she participated in Women’s Evening Fellowship, sang in the choir, and played in the bell choir. She was known for cooking many Easter morning breakfasts, Fall Bazaar ham loaf dinners, and organizing coffee hours after church. She was very generous with her time, talent and treasures, particularly with support to St. Paul’s and Evergreen Retirement Community and various other charitable organizations.

The Monday Afternoon Society of Chestnut Street had lots of laughs, talking and catching up on neighborhood news while sewing or crafting. The group of ladies also put many miles in walking every morning down Menominee Drive. She enjoyed many years of Tuesday afternoon bridge club in addition to the couples bridge club with longtime friends the Zmoleks, Schatzs and Gerths. She and Dave loved attending Oshkosh Symphony concerts. They were there to support their children and grandchildren in all their sporting events, plays, concerts, operettas and activities. Carol loved traveling, spending time with David and family, and escaping Wisconsin winters for Florida in retirement. Carol and David frequently traveled the world with lifelong friends, a group of other couples they met at Newcomers. They were founding members of the social club Edgewater. The family spent most summer weekends at the cottage on Maiden Lake in Oconto County, which everyone in the family had a part in building.

Carol is survived by her children; John Cameron and Gail (Bradley) Cameron of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; Julie Cameron and Don Kruse of Fort Worth, Texas; Anne (Cameron) Gassere and Paul Gassere of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; and daughter-in-law Tracy (Crum) Cameron of Carmel, New York; grandchildren Taylor Cameron of Oshkosh; Kellyn Cameron and Daniel Atkins of Huntersville, North Carolina; Ensign Spencer Gassere of Goose Creek, South Carolina and Katherine Gassere of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is also survived by her sister Joyce and husband, Rev. Roger Kampstra of River Falls, Wisconsin.

In addition to her parents and in-laws, Carol was preceded in death by her husband David, son Bruce Cameron, and grandson Cameron Gassere.

A memorial service for Carol will be held at Evergreen Retirement Community (1130 N Westfield St) Performing Arts Center on Sunday, April 12, 2026 at 2:00PM. A time of visitation will be held from 12:30 PM until the time of service. Burial will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established through the Evergreen Foundation in support of nursing education. https://www.evergreenoshkosh.com/donate/

The family would like to extend our thanks to the kind, caring staff of Creekview at Evergreen who took such loving and compassionate care of Carol for the past two years.

Although saddened by our Mother’s passing, we are joyful knowing that she is again with Dad and free of her struggles here on earth.
