Earl G. Meitzen

Earl G. Meitzen, age 90, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2015, at his home after a lengthy illness with family by his side. The tenth of eleven children, born to the late Gustav and Clara (Anderson) Meitzen, Earl was born on May 13, 1925. He attended Jefferson Elementary School, South Park Junior High School and Oshkosh High School. He married Alice Schmiedel on May 20, 1950. On July 29, 1943, he enlisted in the US Navy. He received training as a Pharmacists Mate Third Class at the US Navy Training Station in Farragut, Idaho. He was then stationed at the US Naval Hospital at Aiea Heights, Oahu, Territory Hawaii. While serving his country, Earl earned three medals: American Area, Victory Medal and Asiatic-Pacific. He was honorably discharged on March 17, 1946. Following his discharge from the Navy, Earl worked at Oshkosh Truck, Rumlow's Tavern and Coca Cola. He retired from the City of Oshkosh Street Department after 30 years of service. he enjoyed vegetable gardening, especially tomatoes, yard work and taking numerous bus trips. His most memorable trip was on June 20, 2013 when he went on the Old Glory Honor Flight to Washington D.C. He was accompanied by his grandson, Charlie, who served as his guardian. He also enjoyed time spent over the past 60 years in the Eagle River and Conover areas. One of his favorite things to do was browse the flea market in downtown Eagle River during their annual Cranberry Fest. He also enjoyed attending his grandchildren's soccer matches, dance recitals and sharing a soda. He is survived by Alice, his wife of 65 years; son, Mark (Kay) Meitzen of Madison, daughter, Laurie L. Meitzen of Oshkosh, four grandchildren he was so very proud of: Kara of Milwaukee, Abby of Sacramento, CA; Maggie of Milwaukee and Charlie of Whitewater, two brothers-in-law, Gerald Schmiedel and Gene( Shirley) Schmiedel; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by infant daughter, Cynthia, seven sisters: Nora (John) Schock, Gwen (Stanley) Luzenski, Bernice (Leslie) Crombie, June (George) Ahrens, Joyce (Ruben) Bathke, Alice (Andy) Muth and Edna Meitzen; three brothers: Nathan (Marion), William (Jenny) and Marvin (Virginia) Meitzen; three brothers-in-law,: Ronald (Arlene), Harold "Jim" Jr., and Karl Schmiedel and one sister, in-law, Pat (Dale) King.Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home-Westside, 100 Lake Pointe Drive. Friends and family may visit at the funeral home from 9:00 am until the time of service. Interment will take place at Lake View Memorial Park.A special thank you to brother-in-law, Gary Schmiedel for his companionship while Alice went to get her hair done; the Aurora Hospice staff, especially Amanda, Kelly, Tammy, Stacy and Virginia; Pastor Ralph Hanusa, Dr. Julie Sheehan and Dr. Stephen Wilson.
