Frederick O. Bergman, age 70, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at St Agnes Hospital in Fond Du Lac. He was born to the late Arthur and Ruth (Luebke) Bergman on May 6, 1955, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Fred married Barbara Sweeney on September 14, 2007.
Fred grew up in the town of Van Dyne, WI. He graduated from North Fond du Lac High School in 1973. In high school, Fred enjoyed extracurriculars like Chess Club, Pep Band, and Dance Band. After high school, Fred went on to earn his bachelor's degree in marketing from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Fred then worked for over 25 years at Taycheedah Women's Prison as a Corrections Officer, retiring in 2009.
Throughout his life and retirement Fred loved to be busy and travel! He had many hobbies he enjoyed. Fred loved hunting and fishing, sharing many fond memories of hunting trips with friends and family. Especially cherished by Fred and family were the annual weeklong trips up north for fishing and fun with the grandkids! Fred loved to show up for his grandkids, especially spectating at soccer games. Golfing and bowling were also big joys in Fred's life. He played in many bowling and golf leagues through the years and was excellent at both, even bowling a 900 series! Fred treasured the friendships and memories made with golf and bowling buddies, especially time spent with stepson, Patrick.
Fred learned to appreciate antiques from his father. Before most people were even out of bed, Fred had already been to multiple estate sales or flea markets. He always had a keen eye for finding treasures! Fred loved to set up his own booths at flea markets to meet and sell to new people. Anything you needed, Fred could find it for you!
Most importantly, Fred was kind, generous, humble, and loving to all. He lived a life of service to others. Fred has been a constant in providing food, clothing, and household goods to those in need through his church pantry and most recently Ruby's Pantry. Fred lived his faith by his actions, especially by helping his church in leadership roles, choir, reading, and anything asked of him over the years. Fred was deeply religious and treasured the community and faith life St. John's Lutheran provided him.
Fred is survived by his stepchildren, Patrick Sweeney and Liz (Neil) Peterson; grandchildren Oliver and Isadora Peterson, lifelong friends Randy and Debbie Gorske and Don and Mary Gorske.
In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by the love of his life, Barb; lifelong friends Tim Morris and Mike Opheim; and his beloved Corgi, Lucy.
A service for Fred will be held at St John's Lutheran Church in Nekimi, WI on Monday, March 9, 2026 at noon. A visitation will be held from 10AM until the time of service. A burial will follow at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery and all are welcome for a meal after in the church hall.
