Gerald Burns, 86, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully at home in the presence of his family on June 26, 2026.
Gerald was born on September 4, 1939, to Stanley and Theresa (Klein) Burns. He married the love of his life, Jeanne Santy, on July 28, 1962, creating a partnership filled with love and laughter. He lived a life deeply rooted in faith, family, hard work, and the beauty of the outdoors.
For more than 50 years, Gerald served his community as a barber. He owned and operated U R Next Barbershop in Oshkosh. His work was never simply a job-it was a way for him to connect and care for others. He generously gave his time and talent by providing haircuts at nursing homes, religious ceremonies, in customer's homes, and wherever someone needed a helping hand.
Gerald was an avid gardener with an unmatched green thumb. He found great joy in tending vegetables, raspberries, strawberries, any fruit tree imaginable, and he loved sharing the fruits of his labor with others. His donations to Father Carr's, friends, and family will be missed.
He was happiest outdoors-fishing on a quiet morning, hunting, four-wheeling, or spending time with his family. He truly understood that many of life's best things are grown, caught, and shared with the people you love.
A hardworking man through and through, Gerald was always ready to help his children with whatever project was underway. From building and remodeling homes, helping with landscaping, and even milking cows he gave his time freely and never hesitated to lend a hand. His unmatched work ethic, practical knowledge, and willingness to help shaped the lives of those around him.
Faith was very important to Gerald and guided the way he lived his life. He was a devoted father who created special memories for his wife and children through simple acts of love. He also had a special way of making his grandchildren feel loved. Grandpa was known for giving out popsicles and fresh fruit and never letting anyone leave his house empty-handed. Those simple gestures became lasting memories of his generosity and love.
Gerald will be remembered as a beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and neighbor. He approached life with grounded wisdom, a sense of humor, and a readiness to help anyone who needed him. His legacy will live on in the family he loved, the many people he served, and the countless acts of kindness he offered throughout his life.
Gerald is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne; his children, Todd (Ann Marie) Burns of Oshkosh, April Burns of Oshkosh, and Jonathan (Melinda) Burns of Manitowoc; grandchildren, Gabrielle (Kurt) Jacobs, and Hope Burns of Oshkosh, Ryan Burns of Manitowoc, Nick Burns of Kiel, and Emily (Michael) Lemmens of Appleton; great-granddaughter, Hadley Jacob's of Oshkosh; brother, James (Jackie) Burns of Oshkosh; sister, Janet Gritzmacher of Oshkosh and many nieces and nephews.
The family extends special thanks to Compassus Hospice, especially Savannah, Joyce, and Sandra, for the exceptional care, compassion, and comfort they provided to Gerald and his family.
A celebration of Gerald's life will be held on July 8 at Saint Raphael's Church, Oshkosh. Visitation 9:00-11:00 am with mass at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a remembrance to Father Carr's Place 2B.
