Dr. John Henry Karl, 89, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, passed away on September 19, 2026, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of scholarship, adventure, creativity, and love.

John's greatest adventure began as a teenager when he met Karen at the Tosa Cinema. After walking her home that evening, he rode his bicycle to her family's house the very next day. It was the beginning of a love story that would span 68 years of marriage.

Married at the young ages of 19 and 20, John and Karen began their life together in Marblehead, Massachusetts, while John attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on a full scholarship. He subsequently earned both his master's degree and doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

A gifted scientist and lifelong learner, John became a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, where he taught physics and geology. His academic career and love of exploration took him and Karen around the world, including a year spent in Malaysia as a visiting professor.

John's intellectual curiosity extended far beyond the classroom. His scientific pursuits included geological research, work connected to the eruption of Mount St. Helens, and aerial research involving geological surveying.

An accomplished pilot, John owned and flew both a seaplane and a Beechcraft aircraft. Equally at home on the water, he sailed the Great Lakes and oceans, combining his love of science with his passion for adventure.

John was also an accomplished author whose published works included Celestial Navigation in the GPS Age, reflecting his extensive knowledge of astronomy, physics, and navigation.

Retirement brought yet another chapter of discovery as John developed his talents as an oil painter. His artistic pursuits were another expression of a curious and creative mind that never stopped exploring, learning, and creating.

Above all, John treasured the life he built with Karen, his beloved wife of 68 years, and the family they raised together.

John is survived by his wife, Karen; daughters Laura Karl of Madison, Wisconsin, and Carolyn Hebert of Oklahoma; and grandchildren Elly Joy Hebert, Henry Karl Hebert, and Wynton Karl.

He is further survived by his siblings, Kate (Rae) Arvan, Clark (Elizabeth) Knuth, and Robin (Donald Jr.) Atwater, along with many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

John was preceded in death by his beloved son, John Raymond Karl, who shared his father's adventurous spirit and passion for exploration, sailing, and aviation.

John will be remembered for his remarkable intellect, boundless curiosity, adventurous spirit, and the enduring love he shared with his family.

Memorial Service

A memorial service for John will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church, 2580 W. 9th Avenue, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. and continue until the start of the service. A light lunch will follow.
