Norbert James Kuenzi passed away at Aurora Medical Center on July 6, 2026, less than a year after the death of his beloved wife, Barbara. He was 90 years old.
Norbert was born in Beaver Dam Wisconsin on August 5, 1935 to Nicholas and Louella (Muhle) Kuenzi. He met his wife, Barbara Mitchell, in 1959 after being set up on a blind date. The two quickly fell in love and were married on February 27, 1960, when Norbert was working as a high school math teacher and Barbara as a medical technician. They were happily married for sixty-five years and together raised five children.
Norbert served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957. He earned a PhD in statistics at the University of Iowa in 1969 and worked for many years as a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, eventually retiring as the chair of the math department.
Norbert was always there for his children and grandchildren, attending countless extracurricular events to support them. He recently even created a Facebook account to keep up with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren’s lives and was always "liking" their posts, offering words of encouragement, and staying in touch.
Active his entire life, Norbert played tennis and also enjoyed hiking, running half marathons, swimming in the lake (even when the water was much too cold!), and bicycling with Barbara on their “bicycle built for two.” He loved cheering on the Brewers, Timber Rattlers, and Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed cribbage, Jeopardy, solving math problems, chatting with Alexa, tackling morning crossword puzzles, and unwinding with the nightly news. He was an active member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church.
Norbert is survived by his children, Mike Kuenzi, Dan Kuenzi, Amy (Kevin Ball) Kuenzi, Peter (Scott Mueller) Kuenzi, and Angie (Dan) Sullivan; grandchildren, Cassandra (Jared) Terfehr, Daniel and Brett (Sarah) Kuenzi, Caleigh Lowther, Cooper Juedes, Tara Kuenzi-Gilboy, Garrett and Brent (Melissa) Kuenzi, Hannah (Brian) Beaudo, Calvin Ball, Brian, Owen and Bridget Sullivan; great-grandchildren, Braxton, Barrett, Millie, Jo, Bennett, Lanora, Samantha, Cora, Cameron, and Logan; brother-and-sisters-in-law, Greg (Marlys) Mitchell, Sandra (Charles) Grohman, and Danielle Babbitt.
In addition to his parents, Norbert is now reunited with his beloved wife, Barbara, his brother Orland (Donalee), sister Shirley Dearth, and his father-and-mother-in-law, Daniel and Margaret Mitchell.
A memorial Mass for Norbert will be held at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 620 Division St, Neenah, WI 54956 on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at 11:30 am officiated by Fr. Tom Long. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 am until the time of the Mass. Private inurnment will be held at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
