Richard John Cox was born in the farmhouse where he lived the majority of his life on November 2, 1934, in Potosi, Wisconsin, and passed away peacefully on February 3, 2026, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, surrounded by his loving family. His life was shaped by small-town values, hard work, and a deep appreciation for family and community. Richard was also a proud veteran who served in the Army National Guard and an active member at the Davies Memorial United Church of Christ in Potosi.

Richard met the love of his life, Sally, at a local roller rink, and they were married on May 31, 1958. They shared more than 66 years of marriage, and built a life rooted in love, partnership, and dedication to one another. Together, they raised five children and spent their years farming on the homestead. Richard’s strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family were ever-present. He was handy and industrious, and could often be found building a tree-house or something with his hands to improve the quality of life for his family.

Family was at the center of Richard’s life. He treasured time spent with his children, grandchildren, friends, and neighbors. Richard was passionate about fishing. Whether it be a lake, river, or the ocean, he enjoyed the quiet tranquility that accompanied the water as well as the thrill of reeling in the catch. Richard was quite social and enjoyed playing cards. He and Sally were part of a euchre card club where boisterous laughter was always present. Whether working the land or sitting around a table with family, Richard found meaning in togetherness. Richard was also an excellent cook and baker, and graciously gave away his delicious pies, pasties, and cookies to those lucky enough to receive them.

Richard was a man of integrity, kindness, and strong values. He led by example, offering quiet wisdom, a steady presence, and unconditional love to those around him. His nine decades were shaped by a farmer’s resilience and stoic ability to bravely navigate whatever he encountered—which was no easy task with five children. His legacy lives on in the family he raised, the land he worked, and the many lives he touched. His was the pinnacle of a life well lived. Richard will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.

Richard is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Koechell of Oshkosh, daughter Lisa Cox (Sean Murphy) of Oshkosh; sons James (Margaret) Cox of West Salem, Michael Cox of Vincent, Iowa, and Ryan Cox of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and special friends Sean Murphy, Sue Krause, Doug Koechell, and Sue Palcek.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Sally Cox, his parents, John and Irene Cox, his sisters, Delores Ford, Joyce Mahr, and Patricia Kelley, and special friends Gean and Pam Critchlow.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 13, 2026, at the Lancaster Congregational Church, 100 Cherry Street, at 11:00 a.m. with a luncheon to follow.
