William (Bill) McAloon passed away peacefully on August 29th, 2024. Bill was born in New London, WI to William and Ada McAloon who proceeded him in death.
Bill was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed every type of hunting and fishing. His favorite place in the word was an old tar paper shack on the Wolf River near New London that his father built in the 1930's. Bill began hunting those river bottoms with his father at the age of 10 and years later he, his brother Bob, and son Hugh purchased 120 acres of land to include the Big and Little Horseshoe Bayous. He enjoyed chasing ducks (with his many hunting dogs) and deer on the property until he was no longer able to traverse the marshy area. He did try one last time and nearly came to his final resting place after falling and being wedged between two down trees.
Bill served numerous terms as the President of the Otter Street Fishing Club and was a founding board member of Sturgeon For Tomorrow. He loved Lake Winnebago and fulfilled a lifelong dream when he and his wife Mary purchased a home on the lake just South of Oshkosh where they resided for over 30 years.
After graduating from UW Oshkosh Bill spent over 30 years as an art teacher in the Menasha (his alma matter) school district. "Mr Mac" as he was called by his students won the teacher of the year award so many consecutive times they changed the rule requiring a five year wait period after winning---of course he won again in five years. He also coached football and track in the district for many years. Bill later earned a Masters Degree from the University of Montana.
An exceptional athlete he played every sport in high school and was a four year football letter winner at UWO. Bill broke down and cried watching the premiere of a video the school produced honoring him along with his son and grandson as part of the first ever fourth generation football players. Bill went on to play semi-pro football for over a decade with the Sheboygan Redwings. He went to every football, baseball, basketball and hockey game his son and grandson ever played.
Bill is survived by his wife of 68 years Mary Lee McAloon, his son Hugh (Denell) McAloon, grandson Dustin (special friend Emily Ortner) and great grandson Jaxton all whom reside in Iola, WI. Along with his two "adopted" grandkids, Tyler Thomas and Sammie Thomas.
In addition to his parents, Bill was proceeded in death by his son Billy, and brothers Jim and Bob.
The family would be honored by your presence at a "Celebration Of Life" party September 8th, 1 p.m. at the Fox River Brewery in Oshkosh. There will not be a visitation as the family has chosen a private graveside service.
A special Thank You to the staff at The Living Oaks and Willows in Iola for providing excellent care.
